Plot
Josh revolves around two rival street gangs based in the streets of Goa, the Eagle Gang led by the indomitable Max Dias (Shah Rukh Khan) and the Bichhu Gang which is run with an iron fist by the arrogant Prakash Sharma (Sharad Kapoor). Max shares a home with his younger sister, Shirley (Aishwarya Rai), whom he fiercely defends. At the same time, Prakash’s younger brother Rahul Sharma (Chandrachur Singh) returns from Mumbai where he studied in a culinary school. Rahul is meek and love-loving who wants to start a bakery business which is opposite of his aggressive brother.
Enter Shirley and Rahul, whose families have a feud, but love finds a way between them. As their relationship grows, Rahul also learns that Max leads the rival gang, complicating things further. At the same time, Prakash is looking to buy a prime bakery shop, not realizing it is jointly owned by Shirley and Rahul's deceased dad. Things soured as Prakash confuses Rahul into thinking Max is their real foe.
With misunderstandings escalating and violence teetering on the verge of erupting between the two gangs, Shirley and Rahul work desperately to avert a brutal conflict. As Prakash schemed against Max, putting their love on the line, the question was only how much love and brotherhood will defeat hatred, or will the rivalries destroy anything in their way?
Star Performance
Josh (2000) is a vibrant entertainer in the form of a love triangle, set to the backdrop of music and raw romance, helmed by Mansoor Khan. Max too, played by Shah Rukh Khan season 1 stunner exudes charisma and energy; while Aishwarya Rai as Shirley adds to the impressive lineup as she matches the impression with her grace and charm. Chandrachur Singh, who plays Rahul, adds much more depth to the character, while a menacing performance by Sharad Kapoor as the villain, Prakash, will leave an impression. The cinematography evokes the colourful streets of Goa, which lends an energized youthfulness to the film. The action scenes are well staged, while the soundtrack contributes to the movie’s vibe. One Of the Most Critically Acclaimed Movies of the Year, Josh has all the makings to be remembered as the most critically acclaimed commercial entertainer of the year.
Analysis
Josh (2000) is an exciting action-drama that relies on the execution and performances but has been to the ground-covered in a predictably manner. Director Mansoor Khan gives us a stunning image of Goa and uses the backdrop of street gang rivalry to illustrate themes of love, loyalty and conflict. This is a spirited performance from Shah Rukh Khan, who serves as the lovable rebel Max and Aishwarya Rai exudes charm. Chandrachur Singh and Sharad Kapoor are notable for their restraint and aggression, respectively. The film’s cinematography captures the colourful Goan streets well, and the action sequences are neatly choreographed. However, despite quirky characters, the story is somewhat formulaic; predictable conflicts and resolutions abound that could have benefited from being more emotionally in-depth. Although Josh has the elements of style, music, and performance, there is only a little substance that makes the film an entertaining but traditional Bollywood entertainer. That’s a little more appealing to the audience that wants a story packed with action, as opposed to the one that it layered in the way the first season was or that wants the characters’ stories to be just as important as the plot.

2000 Josh is a quality action-drama driven by its aesthetic moments, good performances, and terrific music. Overall, the film succeeds shout in its portrayal of gang rivalries and brotherhood, still, it settles for a predictably simple plot and gives nothing much of substance, refusing to flourish in anything excellent- a conventional but fun Bollywood entertainer.
