Jolly Mukherjee is a renowned Bollywood singer, songwriter and producer, who became popular as the country’s King of Strings. Initially, he works as a backup singer for television commercials and subsequently became a music writer for airline on-flight introductions such as the British Airways. However, his passion is really into arranging and composing music. His origin includes a combination of Western and Hindustani Classical music. Jolly rose to fame when he started working at the Madras Cinematic Orchestra, performing with a combination of percussion and strings.
He started working in the music industry as a chorus singer in the year 1978, along with R.D. Burman. Later, he sang for him in Bollywood films like Indrajeet in 1991 and Tum Karo Vaada in 1993. The composer duo, Laxmikant and Pyarelal gave him a break in Feroz Khan’s Davayan: Truth is Power. He sang Diwani Tum Jawanon Ki and the super hit Chahe Meri Jaan Tu Le Le. Jolly admits that Burman made him sing below his baton with the same style similar to Burman’s style. One of his breakthroughs came when music producer, Shashi Gopal (head of Magnasound) offered him to become the arranger of Hariharan’s Hazir. They formed their team and started to collaborate in Hariharan’s successive albums like Jashn, Paigham and Gulfam. Besides working in the film’s music, his jingles were used from the commercials of products like Lifebuoy, Ponds, Apollo Tyres and Red Label Tea.
