Karthik Muthuraman is an Indian politician, film actor and playback singer. He was born as Karthikeyan Muthuraman on September 13, 1960, in Chennai, Tamil Nadu in India to Sulochana and Tamil film actor, R. Muthuraman. He attended St. Bede’s Anglo Indian Higher Secondary School in Chennai and later took Bachelor of Arts degree at the New College in Chennai.
He was debuted in the Tamil film,
in the year 1981, which was helmed P. Bharathiraja. This film turned out to be a cult classic and earned eight Tamil Nadu State Film Awards including the Best Debut Actor, which he received for his brilliant performance in the film. In the same year, a remake of the film entitled Seethakoka Chiluka was released. Since then, there is no looking back. The actor has done more than 100 films up to this time. In the initial stage of his career, he collaborated with director R. V. Udayakumar for three times and all of it received success at the box office. He also worked with actor and comedian, Goundamani in many comedy films. Karthik also received praises for his performance in SP. Muthuraman’s Nallavanuku Nallavan in 1983, where he did a crucial role against the character of Rajinikanth. In 1988, he was seen in Mani Ratnam’s action family drama film,
, together with Prabhu. He earned his first Filmfare Award for Best Actor through this film and the Tamil Nadu State Film Award Special Prize for Best Actor. In the same year, Karthik acted in the Telugu romance film, Abhinandana together with Shobana and
in the lead roles. He received the Nandi Special Jury Award and his second Filmfare Award for Best Actor in Telugu.
In 1990, Karthik acted in the lead role, alongside Revathy and Kushboo in the Tamil film,
, which was helmed by R. V. Udayakumar. He won the Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Actor and his third Filmfare Award for Best Actor in Tamil. In 1993, he collaborated for the third time with R. V. Udayakumar in Ponnumani, where he bagged his fourth Filmfare Award for Best Actor. His team up with the actress, Rambha was appreciated by the audience as they provided good hits during the 90’s. In the year 1996, he acted in the Tamil film,
along with Rambha and Goundamani. This film was helmed by Sundar C. and received positive reviews from the audience and critics. In the same year, he worked with the same director in the profitable comedy film, Mettukudi. Karthik also made a notable performance in Vikraman’s Unnidathil Ennai Koduthen in 1998. This time, he bagged the Cinema Express Award for Best Actor in Tamil and the Tamil Nadu State Film Award Special Prize for Best Actor. He was also seen in the Tamil film, Pooveli, a film that was written and directed by Selva with Abbas, Heera Rajgopal and Kausalya in the lead roles. He won another Tamil Nadu State Film Award Special Prize for Best Actor in this film.
Karthik became one of the busiest actors in town during the 2000s, but he mostly appeared in various medium-budget films. The lead actor role that he usually portrayed was reduced in the early 2000s, and many of his film ventures opened with little publicity or sometimes got delayed due to financial issues. In 2005, he signed in Sathyaraj’s directorial film, Sivalingam IPS, from where he would portray a negative role. However, the film got shelved.
In 2010, he returned to acting and appeared in supporting roles instead of leading roles. He was initially seen as a kind-hearted police officer in the Tamil film, Maanja Velu, before he received positive reviews for the small role he played in Mani Ratnam’s Tamil thriller film, Raavanan. He was seen in Puli Vesham in 2011 and the 3D Telugu film, Om 3D. Karthik also played a negative role in the 2015 Tamil psychological romantic thriller film, Anegan alongside Dhanush. He is currently working in Jindhaa and Amaran 2, which are both expected to release on 2016.
Besides acting, Karthik is also a prominent playback singer since 1991. He sang in films like Suya Mariyathai, Amaran, Pooveli and more. He turned politician prior to the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly election in the year 2006. He participated in the All India Forward Bloc and became the Secretary of the Tamil Nadu State unit of the said political party. He became the president of the party during the electoral campaign in 2006. In 2009, he founded his own political party called Ahila India Naadalum Makkal Katchi and contested against the Virudhunagar constituency and received 15,000 votes only.
Karthik got married to film actress, Ragini, whom he met in the set of the Tamil film, Solaikuyil in 1988. They have two sons namely Ghayn Karthik and
, who is also an actor from the Tamil film industry. In 1992, he got married to Rathi, Ragini’s sister and they have a son named Thiran Karthik.
