She took birth on November 10, 1974, at her aunty's Chennai residence, to Vijayalakshmi and J. Jayakumar. The day after November 10 was Diwali. Jayalalithaa was the one who kept her name Deepa. In 1995 and 2013, Deepa lost her father and mother respectively. She also has a brother named Deepak Jayakumar, who has an MBA degree and is carving a career in real estate. Adarsh Vidyalaya Higher Secondary School, Chennai, Madras University, Cardiff University, and Madurai Kamaraj University are her alma maters. Deepa has done her post graduation in English literature as well as journalism. Before entering politics, she had briefly worked for New Indian Express as a sub-editor.
In 2014, Deepa married K. Madhavan, a businessman. She received a flat from Jayalalithaa as a wedding gift. Initially, Deepa was reluctant to enter into politics but the staff of AIADMK, who were unhappy with the leadership of OPS and Sasikala, forced her to join their party. Thousands of people would gather near her residence and wait for her affirmative answer. On February 24, 2017, she relented and established MADF. She gave her name for the RK Nagar bye-polls bit the electoral officer rejected her nomination on the grounds of an incomplete affidavit. After some time, her husband started his political party named MJDMK. Deepa blamed Sasikala of being jealous of her success and trying to create a rift between her and Madhavan. Deepa went to meet her brother Deepak in Pune, but Sasikala hired goons to attack her there.
Deepa survived the onslaught but had an enormous fight with Deepak over it. When a girl named Amrutha claimed to be Jayalalithaa's daughter, Deepa threatened to take legal action against her and blamed Sasikala's hand in tarnishing Jayalalithaa's reputation. Once, a stranger pretended to be an official from Income Tax department and tried to raid Deepa's house. However, Deepa was absent there, but the rest of her family was present. The fact that he came alone made Madhavan suspicious and he called the police. The man then escaped, and though police searched for them, they couldn't find him. After the death of her father, Deepa's and Jayalalithaa's relationship took a toll. In fact, when Jayalalithaa was in Apollo Hospital, her supporters and party officials didn't even allow Deepa to meet her.
