Director A.M. Fazil has various roles to his credit, including filmmaker, screenwriter and producer. Though his father dreamt of his son to become a doctor, Fazil was mainly interested in extracurricular activities during schooling. He did a post-graduation in Economics. Fasil has directed around 30 movies. He debuted in the Malayalam film industry with the film Manjil Virinja Pookkal. Incidentally, it was also the first movie of Mohanlal. Fazil is one of the best directors during the 80s and 90s of Malayalam film industry. His first film proved that, he is a director who can be relied on in Mollywood. His film Manichitrathazhu was one film, which established him as a mega director. This film won Shobana the prestigious National award. This excellent movie was remade in many southern languages. Fazil not only concentrated on direction, but also in production. Chandralekha, Ramjirao Speaking etc., are his successful films as a producer. He has shown his talent in the Tamil film industry by winning the Best Director Award for Poove Poochoodava. Ironically Faazil could not wave his magic wand during the early 2000s and his films stumbled at the box office. All the same it is heartening to note that, his son Fahadh Faazil is a renowned star in the Malayalam film industry now.
