Nithya was born as Nithya Shanthi in Chennai. Her father worked in Madras Atomic Power Station, and her mother is a homemaker. Interested in the dramas, her father started a drama troupe, and Nithya played in his dramas as a child artist. She started her cinema career in 1969 with a Malayalam film, Kuruthikalam. She made her Tamil debut in 1978 with the film Mariamman Thiruvizha. After that, she got noticed in the film Kudumbam Oru Kadambam directed by SP Muthuraman.
