Radhika Sarathkumar (born Raadika) is a Tamil-Telugu cine and TV artist, producer and entrepreneur. She is the daughter of the late Tamil actor, Mohan R. Radha, and is the eldest of her siblings. Raadika or Radhika (as she is known) studied in Sri Lanka, India and the UK. She was introduced into the Tamil cinema by the legendary, Bharathiraja, in the blockbuster, ‘Kizhakke Pogum Rail’, when she was just 16 years old. Inspite of her success, which of course had a lot of stumbles on the silverscreen, she decided to turn her attention towards TV serials.
Radhika, married to Sarathkumar, another veteran in the Tamil cine industry and a leading politician, started her own production house ‘Radaan’, in 1994. Initially, the company stumbled in the field, and also her marital affairs were going down, which made a strong dent in her mind. She, however, bounced back with her production house under the banner ‘Radaan Mediaworks India Ltd’, by 1999. Since its alpha, Radhika has been Midas, with whatever she touching turning to gold. It has enormously grown to enter the Telugu and Hindi markets, and produce serials as well as movie.
Radhika acted and produced the serial ‘Chithi’, which was aired on Sun TV for more than a decade, from 1999 to 2001. The grand success of this serial and her portrayal of Shakthi and Sharadha won her national plaudits, and it went on to be the most watched regional language television program in India with 467 episodes. She booked a spot in almost all the Tamil women’s hearts through these characters.
The fame of being well recognised through her serials, more than through her movies, made her produce and star in her next serial, ‘Annamalai’. The veteran actor, Sivakumar, who played the role of her husband in the previous serial, played her brother this time. Needless to say, it was a grand success bringing both the producer-cum-actress and the telecaster to the biggest limelight. No Tamil family went to bed on weekdays without watching it. Newspapers began to praise her as the Queen of the Tamil TV industry. All credits to her untiring efforts with the support of her friends, Sripriya and Suhasini, who stood with her through thick and thin.
The relish of two back to back successes made her produce her third starrer, ‘Selvi’, in which she played a normal woman, alongside Saritha, around whom the story revolves. It was another hit serial, which aired around 499 episodes. Her immediate serial was ‘Arasi’, which was a sequel to her previous one and all stuff that seemed boring in the previous one were evenly justified with an all new storyline and cast.
Radhika then started ‘ Chellamay Chellamay is one among the most watched serials on >> Read More... ’, which ended grandly with 845 episodes, and now, she is busy with ‘Vani Rani’, in which she plays a dual role. She has over 3 Filmfare awards, 1 Nandi award, 1 National award and 3 State awards for her movies. She is a frequent tweeter and says that she will not enter politics.
Serials acted: Chithi, Annamalai, Selvi, Arasi, Chellamay, and Vani Rani.
Movies acted: Over 101 movies.
