Actress Rekha

Rekha is a popular South Indian actress, who was born in the year 1970 in Kerala. Her birth name is Josephine and she changed her name to Rekha as the stage name. She completed her education in Ooty. She was introduced to the cinema industry through the veteran Tamil film director Bharathiraja. Kadalora Kavithaigal was her debut movie in the year 1986 and she performed as a teacher in that movie quite naturally. She was accompanied by Sathyaraj and Raja in that movie. It was a hit movie and Rekha was popularly called as Kadalora Kavithaigal Rekha. In the next year, she was called upon by the legendary director Balachandar to appear as a guest in his movie. She immediately nodded her head to him and that movie is Punnagai Mannan, in which she did opposite Kamal Hassan.

Her performance in the Malayalam movie Dasharatham in 1989 was lauded by the critics and she won the Filmfare Award for the Best Actress. She has acted in many Malayalam and Tamil movies as a heroine. She never rejected any roles and hence, she was given good roles with acting scope. She has acted as a nun in the movie In Harihar Nagar. En Bommukutty Ammavuku was the Tamil film which was the remake of the Malayalam movie Ente Mamukkutty Ammakku. This film was praised by the critics and Rekha’s role of a mentally affected person was very well appreciated. In Malayalam, the role of Rekha was done by Poornima Jayaram.

Puriyatha Pudhir directed by K. S. Ravi Kumar gave her a new twist in her career. She had lots of guts to take a call girl role in the movie Guna. Her performance was lauded well by Kamal Haasan, who is her co-star in Guna. After few roles, she started to act in character roles, such as sister in law and mother.

Her latest Tamil movie was in Thalaiva, a guest role and Bangalore Days in Malayalam as Parvathy Menon’s mother.
