Vani Jairam

Vani Jairam is a South Indian playback singer in Indian cinema and was born in 30th November 1945 in Vellore, Tamil Nadu. She was the fifth daughter of a family of eight children. Her mother is Padmavathi and a disciple of Ranga Ramunaja Iyengar. He taught her Dikshitar kritis and at age of eight, she got the opportunity of singing in All India Radio.

Her Carnatic music teachers were Srinivasa Iyengar, R. S. Mani and T. R. Balasubramanian. And Ustad Abdul Rahman Khan was her Hindustani classical music teacher. Vani was married to Jayaram and they settled in Mumbai after their marriage. In Mumbai, she realized her dream of becoming a playback singer in the film industry.

For over four decades of her singing career, she has sung playback for several films and has recorded several private music albums. In 1974, she started playback singing in Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada and Telugu cinema. She has worked with the top most South Indian music directors such as M. S. Viswanathan, M. B. Sreenivasan, K. V. Mahadevan, M. K. Arjunan, Jerry AmaldevIlayaraaja and Bengali music director Salil Chowdhary.

Vani has made recordings in Gujarati, Marathi, Bengali, Malayalam and Telugu as well. She has sung a wide variety of songs, including songs for films, pop, traditional Indian music, folk songs, bhajans and ghazals. She has recorded Thumri Dadra & Bhajans and Holi Songs with Pandit Briju Maharaj. Also, she has recorded "Gita Govindam" with Odissi Guru Kelucharan Mohopatra playing the Pakhawaj. She has written and composed music for her song collection named "Murugan Songs”. Some of the remarkable songs in her singing life were Ezhu Swarangalukkul, Keliviyin Nayangane, Kavidhai Kelungal Nadhamenum, Ennulil Engo, Yaaradhu sollamal, Sugamana ragangale, Aana kana and Megamae Megamae. Vani Jairam is an Indian Playback Singer. She worked in the Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada Film Industries. Her actual name is Kalaivani. Vani was born on the 30th of November in the year 1945. She was born in Vellore, Tamil Nadu. Her whole family are well trained musicans. She is the fifth daughter in the total of six daughters their parents had. Her mother’s name is Padmavathi. Her mother got trained under Ranga Ramajuna Iyengar. Vani got trained under Kadalur Srinivas Iyengar, R. S. Mani, and T. R. Balasubramanian. She was fond of radio and was always listening to Hindi movie songs. She performed for the first time when she was eight years in All India Radio in Madras, Tamil Nadu. Vani went to Queen Mary’s College of Madras University in Chennai, Tamil Nadu.

After her studies, she worked as an employee in a branch of State Bank of India in Madras. She later got transferred to Hyderabad branch. Vani married Jayaram and moved to Mumbai with her husband. She requested for a branch transfer in Mumbai. Vani’s husband, Jayaram supported her in her singing. He got her trained in Hindustani Classical Music under Ustad Abdul Rehman Khan. She had to quit her job at SBI to focus on her training.
