His father is an ex-police officer, his mom is a homemaker and his sister, who is younger than him, is a fashion designer. His granddad was his influence and the reason that he fell in love with cinematography. He was eleven when he got his first camera and immediately started taking pictures of whatever he came across. He, later on, borrowed his grandfather’s SLR camera to click pictures. His religion at birth was Hariharan, but he converted to Buddhism later on. When he converted religions, he also underwent a name change and kept it as Gavemic U Ary. The reason he changed his name was because of his ‘guru’ who introduced him to Buddhism. His career in the Indian film industry began in the early 2000’s. In the year 2007, he shot documentaries and commercials independently. However, this work was not creatively satisfying for him. His first job in Indian cinema was as an assistant cameraman under Santosh Sivan’s supervision. Santosh Sivan is an Indian cinematographer who has 45 films and 41 documentaries under his belt.
