His father as a Matson Navigation Co executive. His mother was a teacher. His native is Virginia, and he spent his early age in Memphis. He spent his school days directing and writing plays. He then ended up in San Francisco at the American Conservatory Theatre. He moved again to Memphis. His father died after a short time. He was in grief, and he used it as a legacy to start his feature film. His first feature film was The Poor & Hungry.
