He began directing short films and in the year 1999, he directed My Holidays, and in the year 2002, The Spongeman. By the year 2004, he received an offer from Sergio G.Sanchez, who was directing the short film, 7337, which was based on the concept of The Orphanage. He started directing these films, which doubled the money and time, so he planned to get help from his fellow director, Del Toro. The film released at the Cannes Film Festival on 20 May, 2007. The film was first released in Spain with a box office hit and soon, all over the world with about $8.3 million in a four-day launch, which was the second highest scoring film in Spanish. For this movie, he received the award for Best Director at the Goya Awards by the year 2008.
