S P Balasubrahmanyam is still considered to be one among the best musicians in the past three decades, in spite of the surge of various new comers. This legendary singer is reputed for his intense voice, profound knowledge of music, and a style of singing which is appreciated even today. SPB, as he is fondly called, has given his voice for more than 30000 songs. His name is recorded in the Guiness Book of World Records for singing several songs in a short span of time. He has sung the most in Telugu, the next being Tamil. He has also given his beautiful voice for Sanskrit slokas. 

Other than Telugu and Tamil SPB has sung in Hindi, Malayalam and Kannada too. SPB also tried his luck as music director in Telugu film industry (he had composed one film Sigaram in Tamil too). 

A south Indian singer becoming successful in Bollywood is quite a feat, but SPB achieved that. In fact, he was the regular for some of Salman Khan’s films including, the musical blockbuster Hum Aapke Hain Kaun. With his imminent voice, he also shined as a dubbing artist. 

Hailing from Andhrapradesh, SPB comes from a traditional Telugu Brahmin origin. SPB tested waters even in acting. His sister SP Sailaja is also a noted singer. Born on 4th June 1946, SPB gained interest in music very early. He got to know about the flute and harmonium by his own interest. He nevertheless followed the wish of his father and did an AMIE course. During his engineering days SPB took part in various singing competitions and garnered several awards. Music composer S P Kodandapani introduced SPB into singing for films, since he was attracted towards SPB’s voice.

Bala Murali Krishna is the popular Carnatic Vocalist and the renowned Playback singer in Indian cinema. He was born in the year 1930 in East Godavari district in Andhra Pradesh as Murali Krishna. As his father was a popular musician, Murali Krishna learnt to play the musical instruments at his young age. At the young age of eight, child Murali Krishna vocalized the Thyagaraja Keerthanas in a big concert. By seeing his amazing talent, the popular Harikatha master Musunuri Suryanarayana Murty Bhagavatar, prefixed Bala to Murali Krishna. At the age of 15, he became the master of all the Melakarta 72 ragas. Apart from singing the Carnatic songs, he plays Violin, Kanjira and Mridhangam. This legend has performed more than twenty five thousand concerts in India and abroad. He had composed more than 400 songs in Tamil, Telugu, Sanskrit and Kannada. He has acted in a few movies and his career first movie was Bhaktha Prahalada, which got released in the year 1967. He rendered his voice to popular actors in playback singing. His topmost songs in Tamil are Oru Naal Podhuma from the movie Thiruvilayadal for the veteran actor T. S. Balaiya and Chinna Kannan Azhaikkiran from the movie Kavikuyil for actor Sivakumar. His latest playback singing in the films is Anbalae Azhagagum Veedu from the Tamil movie Pasanga. Bala Murali Krishna has sung in many Malayalam, Kannada and Telugu films too. In the year 1976, he was awarded as the Best Singer with the National Award for the Kannada film Hamsageethe. In 1987, he was provided with the National Award as the Best Music Director for the movie Madhavacharya. In the same year he was awarded as the Best Playback singer for the movie Swathi Thirunaal, by the Kerala State Government. This living music legend is honored with Honorary Doctorate and the civilian honors such as Padma Bhushan, Padma Vibushan and Padma Shri.


Nithyashree Venkataramanan

Nithyashree, the young music champ was born in Chennai in the year 1999. Her parents are Mr. S. Venkataramanan and Mrs. Lakshmi. Nithya is currently doing her 12th standard in S.B.O.A School in Anna Nagar. Nithyashree’s elder sister, Vhaijaiyanthi Shree was learning the Carnatic music and hence Nithya learnt a lot by listening to her sister’s singing. When Nithyashree turned five, she began to sing in her father’s band. She pursued her Carnatic lessons at the age of 6 from Mrs. Lakshmi Raman. Later, she learnt music from Mrs. Lalgudi Padmavathy Ananthagopalan and Mr. T. S. Venkatraman. Though she is interested in Carnatic music, she is also a passionate towards the light music. While seeing her passion, her parents joined Nithya in a Child Orchestra named “Isai Mottugal”, which was managed by Drums Gopal. This cute young lady has performed more than two hundred stage shows within a time span of two years. When her parents came to know about the Musical Reality Show, “Airtel Super Singer Junior - 2” in Star Vijay TV, they made her to participate in it. She was just 9, when she participated. Though, she did not win the title, she became the favorite child of entire Tamilnadu. She won the hearts of people and got appreciation from the legendary playback singers. This cute music doll made her music debut in the film industry through Yuvan Shankar Raja’s musical, ‘Avan Ivan’ directed by Bala. She sang, “Oru Malayoram” song from that movie. Music director Dheena has provided her a wide opportunity in his albums and films. Nithyashree and her sister, Vhaijaiyanthi Shree were very lucky to get the wonderful opportunity to sing vocals in the movie “I” composed by A.R. Rahman. Both the sisters released their devotional musical album, which is composed by V.K. Kannan. In December 2010, they launched their album in the presence of the veteran playback singer Dr. S. Janaki. Nithyahree has visited many countries to entertain the music lovers. Nithya’s goal is to prove herself as a versatile singer. And hence, she participated in the most popular reality show in India, called “Indian Idol Junior-2” by Sony Entertainment Television. This girl managed to get the Runner-up in this honorable show. Many judges were impressed by her performances and she was given standing ovations for her best singing challenge, many times.
