Prathap Pothan is a famous South Indian Director, Actor, Writer and Producer who has acted in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Hindi movies. He was born on 13 August 1955 in Trivandrum. His father was a well to do Businessman named Kolathinkal Pothan. His father passed away when he was 15 years old. He also has a elder brother whose name is Hari Pothan who has produced many movies. Prathap was put in a boarding school in Ooty at the age of 5. Initially he was interested in Painting. However, once he joined college, he started acting in plays with the help of his friends and gradually he was more interested in acting than painting. After his graduation in Madras Christian College (MCC), Prathap worked in a Mumbai ad agency as a copywriter, later he also worked at Sistas Ad Agency and Hindustan Thomson.
Prathap married the then famous Actress Radhika in 1985. However, their marriage did not last long and they separated in 1986. He then remarried Amala Sathyanath who was a Senior Corporate Professional in 1990. The couple have a daughter named Keya born in 1991. Their marriage too ended after 22 years i.e, in 2012.
He has also directed a movie in Telugu in the year 1991 named ‘Chaitanya’ which had Akkineni Nagarjuna Akkineni Nagarjuna is a veteran Indian actor, TV p >> Read More... and famous actress Gautami in the lead roles. 
He won a National Award (Indira Gandhi Award) as the First Best Movie of a Director for the movie ‘Meendum Oru Kaathal Kathai’. His former wife, Radhika also starred in this movie. After winning the National award, he started getting a lot of offers. He acted in the movies that he wanted to and made films that he wanted to.
He has an ad agency named Green Apple and was busy with commercials for Nippo and MRF Tyres.
 
On 15th July 2022, Pratap was found dead at his Kilapuk house in Chennai. It was reported that it is a natural death and due to some complications, his health deteriorated.
