Harry Styles, born as Harry Edward Styles, is a well known English singer and songwriter, and a widely known member of the famous boy band, One Direction. As a singer, he made his debut with his band, White Eskimo, who use to perform locally.
Styles was born in Redditch, in the Worcestershire County. He is the son of Anne Cox and Desmond "Des" Styles. Styles was raised in a small village of Holmes Chapel, Cheshire, along with his sister, Gemma. As a child, he attended Holmes Chapel Comprehensive School. After his parent’s divorce, he got very depressed and often cried out of helplessness. He took up his first job at a Bakery, when he turned sixteen.
As a child, Styles wanted to be a lawyer, but he loved singing, and immensely followed Freddie Mercury,
, and The Beatles. Styles was the lead singer for the local band, White Eskimo.
Styles auditioned for the seventh series of the British singing competition, The X Factor, as a solo candidate. His dreams were shattered when he failed to progress to the "Boys" category, along with four others in his age group. However, his destiny had a different plan for him, as Nicole Scherzinger, a guest judge on the show, suggested him and the four others, to form a five-piece boy band, during the boot camp stage of the competition. They auditioned again and qualified for the "Groups" category. Subsequently, the group got together and practiced a lot for two weeks, and it was Styles who came up with the name, One Direction. For their qualifying song and their first song as a band, they sang an acoustic version of "Torn"; it won the heart of the judge,
- who later commented that the group’s performance convinced him that they "were confident, fun, like a gang of friends, and kind of fearless as well." The group quickly became popular in the United Kingdom.
After the finals, One Direction finished in third place and immediately afterwards, their song - "Forever Young", which would have been released if they had won, was leaked onto the internet.
After the show ended, One Direction signed a £2 million record contract, with Simon Cowell's Syco Records. They began recording for their debut album in January 2011, and they also flew to Los Angeles, to work with the record producer, Red One. Recording for their debut album took place in London, Los Angeles, and Stockholm, as One Direction worked with producers Steve Mac, Rami Yacoub, Savan Kotecha and Carl Falk, among others.
The book - One Direction: Forever Young (Our Official X Factor Story), licensed by One Direction, was published by Harper Collins in February 2011, and subsequently topped The Sunday Times Bestseller list.
Following One Direction’s signing with Syco Entertainment in 2010; the band released their first studio album, Up All Night, in 2011, which became a bestseller in both the United States and the United Kingdom. In 2012, the band came out with their second album, Take Me Home.
A documentary, One Direction: This Is Us, directed by
, came out in August 2013, and went on to gross more than $30 million worldwide in the first weekend itself. On 25 November 2013, the band released their third studio album, Midnight Memories. Their fourth studio album, Four came out in 2014.
