Ramis was born on November 21, 1944 in Chicago. His parents were Ruth and Nathan Ramis. He completed his schooling from Nicholas Senn High School by the year 1962. He graduated from Washington University by 1966.

On July 1967, he married San Francisco. She was an actor, and they had one daughter. Later, he married Erica Mann, who was the daughter of a director. With her, he had two sons.

After that, he worked in a mental institution for about seven months. Later, he left the institution, and entered into Hollywood and worked with several actors. He used to say that working in a mental institute had trained him to work with the leads. From his college days, he started freelancing for newspapers and tried improving his writing skills. His writing activity led him to become a joke editor at Playboy Magazine. His excellent writing skills had led him to get promoted as an associate editor. Ramis became a performer portraying a writer in the television comedy series ‘SCTV’ for the first three years. He then became a writer at ‘ Saturday Night Live Saturday Night Live or popularly called as NBC&#39 >> Read More... ’, but chose to continue with SCTV. By the year 1984, he became an executive producer for a variety show named "The Top". Various performances were available in the show that include “Girls Just Want to Have Fun". He came out of SCTV to get into his new career that includes writing several scripts for several magazines. That year, he directed his first humor film named, ‘Animal House’, which was a box-office hit and earned about $141 million.

In May 2010, Ramis contracted an infection and lost the ability to walk. He died on February 24, 2014.

He had received several awards: in 2005 he received the Austin Film Festival award, and by 2010, he received the Lifetime Achievement award. His career started by the year 1978 as a producer, director, and actor, and lasted till 2009. He had performed in several television shows, which he had directed, acted and written. He was also involved in video game development.
