Karunanidhi, the Indian political leader, was born on 3rd June 1924 in Thirukkuvalai, a district in Nagapattinam as Dakshinamoorthy. His parents are Muthuvel and Anjugam. Karunanidhi was married to Padmavathy. After her death, he married Dayalu and Rajathi. Karunanidhi has four sons and two daughters. M. K. Muthu is his elder son and he was born to his first wife, Padmavathy. M. K. Alagiri is his second son, who resides in Madurai. M. K. Stalin, his third son, is also a politician and has been referred as his political heir. M. K. Tamilarasu is his fourth son. Selvi is his elder daughter and Kanimozhi is his youngest child and she is the daughter of Rajathi.
Born in a Telugu family, Karunanidhi had been interested in Tamil and his poetry writing and script writing skills led him to the cinema. His first film was Rajakumari. He was the scriptwriter of the film. It was a huge hit and when he tasted his first success, he was just 20 years. He inserted his political ideologies through Parasakthi and from there he didn’t meet any slide in his cinema career. His career started at the Modern Theaters in Salem. Later, the scriptwriter cum dialogue writer moved to Chennai, the capital of Tamilnadu. Karunanidhi’s writing skill is being appreciated still.
His poetries, biographies, novels, stage plays and cinema lyrics prove his excellence in handling the words. Although he entered the politics at his 14th age, he was acknowledged as a politician during his peak time in cinema. At his young age, he started his newspaper called Manavar Nesan. It was a handwritten newspaper and he supplied them directly to the readers. After his successful career in cinema, he gradually entered into politics with the support from CN Annadurai, who was the DMK party leader. Karunanidhi was first elected as an MLA in 1957. In 1967, he became the Public Works Minister. He became the Chief Minister of Tamilnadu for the first time in 1969. Karunanidhi had been the CM for five times, so far.
In the latest elections that were held in 2016, his party men lost to the opponents ADMK, consecutively for the second time. Karunanidhi had been awarded an honorary doctorate in 1971 by Annamalai University, Chidambaram. He also received an honorary doctorate from Madurai Kamaraj University in 2006. Even at his 92, he has been active and has been working for his party. In 2018: Karunanidhi’s 94th birthday was celebrated in grandeur by the DMK people on 3rd June 2018. Karunanidhi couldn’t take part in the event due to some age-related illness, but the DMK cadres believed that he will get well soon and would speak with them. Later, they planned to celebrate the Golden Jubilee year of DMK under Karunanidhi’s leadership.
But, it didn’t happen, due to the ill health of Karunanidhi. Karunanidhi suffered from urinary tract infection and was admitted to the Kauvery Hospital on 28th July 2018. He suffered from low BP and also had a troubled breathing. The DMK leader was monitored by the expert doctors and the nurses’ team 24x7. His health condition was stable only with the life support equipment. Although Karunanidhi had been given the right medications, his health started deteriorating. Finally, Karunanidhi left for the eternal world on 7th August 2018 at 6:10 pm.
