Urvashi is the stage name of Kavitha Ranjini, a producer, film actress, TV anchor and a script writer from India. She was born on 1970 at Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, India. Her father is Chavara V. P. Nair and her mother is Vijayalakshmi. Her siblings are actress and classical dancer, Kalaranjini, Malayalam actress and comedian, Kalpana Priyadarshini,
and Prince who is also a Malayalam actor. Urvashi has been married twice. Her first marriage was held on October 11, 2000 with actor Manoj K. Jayan but they got separated in year 2008 because of some differences. They have been divorced in Chennai and later separated by an order from the court. Urvashi’s daughter, Tejalakshmi or better known as Kunjatta now lives with his father Manoj. Then Urvashi was married again to a Civil Engineer in November 2013. Urvashi and Shivaprasad’s marriage was held through a private ceremony in Chennai. The two later announced that Urvashi was pregnant on her second child and subsequently gave birth to a baby boy on August 8, 2014.
Urvashi was known to be a famous lead actress in year 1980 to 1990 in four different languages such as Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada films. She was also the producer and the script writer of the 1994 Malayalam film, Pidakkozhi Koovunna Noottandu. She was also the script writer of the film, Utsavamelam in 1992. She was awarded as Best Supporting Actress in the National Film Award for her notable performance in Sathyan Anthikkad’s 2005 film, Achuvinte Amma, a story about a mother and daughter deep-rooted relationship. She played the lead role of the mother, Vanaja along with
who played the role of the daughter, Achu. She also got the Best Supporting Actress award in the Kerala State Film Award.
Urvashi have acted in over 300 Malayalam, Hindi, Kannada, Tamil and Telugu films. She initiated her career at an early age in Ninaivukal Maraivathillai; however, the film was never publicized. Her second movie was Thodarum Uravu which she finished in year 1983 but the film was released in 1986. She was debuted as a film actress in the Tamil film, Munthanai Mudichchu in 1983. The movie was a success and made her the most in-demand actress in the entire languages of South India. Later, she did successful movies like Mummy and Me, Sakudumbam Shyamala, Achuvinte Amma and more, which made her the “Lady Superstar of Malayalam Film”. Her good performance in acting was highly acclaimed by her co-stars, directors and producers. She was also called as Nadip Arasi because of her good performance and charm. She was also known to be the most versatile actress in the film industry of South India.
One of the earlier Malayalam films of Urvashi is the Ethirppukal in 1984. She was also starred in the 1995 award-winning film, Kazhakam by M. P. Sukumaran Nair without any compensation. She got the Best Actress award for his role in Kazhakam. In 1980, she was featured in Thalayanamanthram, Mazhavilkavadi and more. She also got the chance to be with the finest actors like Dr. Ambarish,
, Dr. Rajkumar and many more. In 2005, her Kannada film, Rama Shama Bhama became a box-office success and her role as Bhama was appreciated by the viewers and critics.
Urvashi also appeared in small screens. She was the host of Sun TV’s game show, Thanga Vettai. She also hosted Rani Maharani in Surya TV and the top-rated game show, SwarnaMazhain the same channel. She was also the jury in the reality show, Vodafone Comedy Stars and
broadcasted on Asianet channel and Mazhavil Manorama. Urvashi acted in several TV serials and ads. She was also the celebrity jury in the reality shows, Champion which was aired on Surya TV and the Season 2 of Munch Star Singer Junior together with Sujatha and G. Venugopal.
Besides being a jury and acting, Urvashi is also a television anchor of Bhagyalakshmi telecasted on Kairali TV. She has also produced, wrote and performed in various Sun TV serials. She also has her own talk shows like
