Stephen Chbosky is an American screenwriter and a novelist. He is also a director and is known for writing the best-selling novel The Perks of being a Wallflower. He is also known for directing the film version of the same novel. One of his famous television works includes the CBS television series, Jericho. Chbosky was born on January 25, 1970, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

He was raised in Pennsylvania. His father, Fred G. Chbosky was an executive in a steel company. His mother, Lea was a tax preparer. Chbosky went to the University of Southern California to pursue a degree in Screenwriter program. In 1995, he acted,and wrote his independent film named The Four Corners of Nowhere. The Sundance Film Festival accepted Chbosky’s movie, and the movie was premiered on the Sundance Channel. The Perks of Being a Wallflower, Chbosky’s first novel was published by MTV Books. The novel was published in the year 1999 and was a huge commercial success, especially among the teenagers. In the year 2000, the novel was ranked at the top of the MTV’s Best-selling novels.

Till 2007, the MTV had sold 700,000 copies of the novel. The novel gained a lot of appreciation and was published in more than 30 languages. In 2007, Chbosky wrote the screenplay for the movie adaptation of the Broadway play Rock Musical Rent. On his agent’s advice, Chbosky started looking for work in television apart from movies and thus he ended up being a writer, -creator, and executive producer of the CBS Television series Jericho. The show was based on the story of a small-town Jericho, who is struggling with the repercussions of nuclear attacks. The first season of the show had a dull plot and thus the show was ultimately canceled. Later in the year 2011, Chbosky directed and wrote the film The Perks of being a Wallflower, an adaptation of his novel.

The movie even won the Independent Spirit Awards in the year 2013 for the Best Film Feature Award and the Best Dramatic Movie award in the People’s Choice Award. Currently, Chbosky is working as a screenwriter for the movie Beauty and the Beast. Chbosky lives in Los Angeles, California.
