English Novelist Irvine Welsh

Irvine Welsh is a well-known British novelist, short-story writer, and playwright. He was born in the port area known as Leith in the Edinburgh city of Scotland. Irvine moved to Muirhouse estate in Edinburgh along with his family. His father was a dock worker in Leith but due to his bad health he left this job and started working as a carpet salesperson and his mother worked as a waitress. His father died when Irvine was of 25 years old. Welsh studied at Ainslie Park High School in Edinburgh and later on went to do a City and Guilds course in the field of electrical engineering.

He took up the job of television repair person and then he had to quit it due to an electric shock and look for another job. Welsh headed for London and left Edinburgh in the year 1978 to perform in the punk scene where he played guitar and sang in The Pubic Lice and Stairway. He went through a series of arrests for getting involved in the small crimes and then a suspended sentence for trashing a North London community center inspired Welsh to transform himself. Later, he began to study computing with the help of Manpower Services Commission of United Kingdom. He returned to his homeland in the mid-1980s and started working for the city’s housing department. He pursued a degree of Masters in Business Administration from Heriot-Watt University.

He has done many reading trips around the world and gets himself associated with house music being its promoter, producer, and a DJ. He is also the official ambassador of football Homeless World Cup since the year 2014. In an interview, he mentioned that he currently stays in Chicago along with his wife named Elizabeth because earlier he used to live in Dublin and also he loves to lead a simple life like any other man. So far, Welsh had written about four collections of short stories and nine novels. He wrote his first novel titled Trainspotting, which got published in the year 1993. This novel brought him fame and recognized him as a great novelist.
