Gerwig is a native of the capital city of U.S. state of California named Sacramento. Her mother, Christine, and father Gordon Gerwig used to work as a nurse and a financial consultant respectively. She has Irish, German, and English ancestry. She was brought up as a follower of the liberal religion called Unitarian Universalist, in spite of the fact that she went to a Catholic School to complete her education. She gave her voice for the cartoon named China, IL in the American cable network show named Adult Swim. She also worked with Noah Baumbach, her boyfriend in the year 2010 in the movie named Greenberg. She was glad to be selected for the 64th Berlin International Film Festival as a member of the jury in the year 2014. She appeared in the year 2014 on a stage debut in The Village Bike of Penelope Skinner at the theatre  named Lucille Lortel in New York as Becky.

In the year 2015, she wrote and directed the film named Lady Bird. The film is being planned to start in 2016 under the production of IAC Films. She collaborated with Mistress America and Noah Baumbach in the year 2015. Her next role as a star was in the romantic comedy film of America named Maggie's Plan in the year 2015. It was the first one to showcase on the 2015 Toronto International Film Festival's official selection. The movie screened at the 66th Berlin International Film Festival and at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival.
