Plot
The movie starts in a pub owned by Owen Pup, whose condition is terrible because it is currently not working. On a stormy night a man named Neal comes inside the pub and says “let me meet him” while offering a massive amount of money but Owen flatly refused and sent him back. The mystery of this pub is inside its basement, there lives a supernatural creature who can make you talk to any dead person; you just have to her some item of that dead person; after eating the item she will call the soul of that person and that person’s soul will be destroyed. Then it will take the form and you can talk to that dead person but only for two minutes. The entity is so powerful that it can even kill you. The creature only obeys the owner of the pub, Owen, who has made this process a business. But now he is tired of all these and tonight he planned to set fire to the basement along with the creature to end this mess forever. Before setting fire Owen records a video message for the next owner in case he fails in his plans. He records everything in the message that there is an elusive creature living in the basement whose owner is you and you have to protect the beast from going outside otherwise everything will be destroyed. Then he went to light fire in the basement but the poor guy got himself burnt and died on spot. Who is going to be the next owner? What is the secret of that basement? The rest of the movie revolves around it.
Star Performance
Freya Allan did her best as did the supporting cast, along with Peter Mullan and Saffron Burrows. The filmmakers could have executed in a better way elevating storyline, dialogues and suspense scenes.
Analysis
It felt like the filmmakers relied too heavily on these elements without giving enough attention to drafting a solid and engaging narrative. The idea behind the story was good but the execution team failed which made the story non scary and pointless at some time. The movie is less about horror and more about a tense thriller. The movie is overall satisfying and compelling to watch, the execution could have been a lot better. Despite the film's shortcomings, the actors broughtunique their characters to life with fabulous acting.
