Asghar Farhadi was born on 7th May 1972 in the city of Homayunshahr in the province of Isfahan, Iran. He is married to Parisa Bakhtavar, who is a television and film director by profession. Parisa and Asghar are the parents of Saaghar and
, also an actress by profession. He is an alumnus of the University of Tehran. He did his Bachelors in Dramatic Arts from here. He did his Major in Stage Direction from the Tarbiat Modares University, Tehran.
After graduating with a degree in stage direction, he started directing short films under 8 mm and 16 mm formats. Asghar’s directorial debut was with the show, The Waiter in 1998. This show was broadcasted on the IRIB TV5 channel. He is also credited for the production as well as the screenplay of this show. His second show was an IRIB drama series, L.A. Doctors in 1998. He also wrote the script of the series. This show had just one season, which was filmed in Los Angeles, California. The story was based on the lives of four doctors residing in LA and the problems faced by them due to the USA’s medical facility and also the negative impacts it had on the patients.
In the 1990s and early 2000s, he did four major shows as a writer, director, and producer. Farhadi started writing for the movies with the film Low Heights in 2002. He co-wrote the story of the film with Ebrahim Hatamikia , a film writer and director. The story was based on the life of a poor man from Iran and his miseries due to the lack of employment in the area where he resided. The story takes a very sharp turn when he gets a job opportunity from Bandar Abbas, which he accepts without being hesitant. After he boards the plane to his new job, he hijacks it at gun point and asks the pilot to direct the plane to Dubai. Due to the scarcity of fuel, the plane crashes into the water.
Other than this movie, he is credited mostly for being the writer of over ten other major-hit movies. His recent major blockbuster movie was the 2011 release, A Separation. In this movie, he worked with his daughter Sarina. Asghar is also a costume designer by profession. He was involved in designing costumes for the movie Dancing in the Dust (2003) and About Elly (2009). He is the recipient of many awards which include an Oscar for the Best Foreign Language Film.
