Prabal Gurung

Prabal is a sound example for many. He was born in Singapore to Nepalese parents. He is currently settled in NYC. Since his parents are both Nepalese, after his birth, they found it more convenient and reasonable to shift to Nepal so he could be close to his family background. They shifted to Kathmandu in Nepal where he completed his high school studies from a prestigious school named St. Xavier’s, which is a Catholic School. Unrelated to his current job, he completed his Hotel Management course from the National Council of Hotel Management, Catering Technology and Applied Nutrition from Dadar, Mumbai. He then shifted to Delhi to pursue his dream to become a fashion designer.

While standing in a Chanel store, he remembers thinking to himself that he wanted to belong to that world, the world of fashion. To professionalize his fashion designing career, he joined the National Institute of Fashion Technology in Delhi. After moving to New York Click to look into! >> Read More... in 1999, Prabal joined the famous and prestigious Parsons School of Design. While he was there, he interned for DKNY owner Donna Karan.

All his active participation, true dedication, and hard work showed in his first year at Parsons’ when he got the title for the Best Designer at the annual competition. He experienced with other famous brands to gain experience after studying at Parsons School of Design like Cynthia Rowley. His career highlight was when he became the design director at the famous Bill Blass, where he showcased his talent and hard work for five years straight. After gaining lots of experience after working with several world class designers and performing perfectly well at Bill Blass, he left it to launch his own fashion line named after himself, PRABAL GURUNG. It’s only fitting because it was all his effort and hard work that he made it this far.

He launched it at the perfect time in 2009: during the New York Fashion Week. He showcased his first runway in the Tents. His nominations include the CFDA Swarovski Womenswear Award and has also won the Ecco Domani Fashion Fund Award. He was chosen as the CFDA Fashion Incubator and ended up as the runner-up for Vogue Fashion Fund. Worried about the conditions of Nepal, he wishes to be an example to all those who have a dream so that they may go ahead and pursue it.
