Born in Madison, Wisconsin in the USA on October 17, 1960, Rob Marshall is a renowned director in Hollywood and has directed both musical plays and movies. Not only a director, but he has also been a choreographer. Marshall was born to Robert D. Marshall and Anne Marshall. Rob’s father served as a professor. Although Rob was born in Madison, Wisconsin he grew up in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He has two siblings- ‘Kathleen Marshall’ and Maura Marshall. Rob’s younger sister, Kathleen, is also a famous director, choreographer and also a script consultant. He did his schooling from Taylor Allderdice High School in Pittsburgh and finished school in 1978. Rob completed his graduation from Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh. He had an inclination towards musicals since childhood.
Rob also worked at a theatre in Pittsburgh while in college and performed thespian activities with professional theatre companies such as Pittsburgh Civic Light Opera. After that, Rob decided to work as a dancer and started performing at Broadway shows. After getting better, he never danced and went ahead to become a choreographer and then a director. This tele-film garnered a huge response from the viewers and also received Emmy Award. Afterwards, he worked as a director for the movie, Chicago (2002). This movie was also inspired from the musical, Chicago, by Kander and Ebb. Rob received Academy Award nominations under the category of Best Director for this film.
Rob then went ahead to direct the movie, “Memoirs of a Geisha” (2005). This film was inspired from the popular book of the same name by ‘Arthur Golden’. This flick also managed to receive three awards and earned a total box office collection of $162,242,962. His next film was Nine, inspired from the musical, in the year 2009. This film failed to gain the appreciation of the viewers but still received Academy Award nominations. In 2011, Rob directed the film, “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides”, the fourth film in the Pirates of the Caribbean series. He then went ahead to direct “Into the Woods” (2014), an adaptation of a Disney movie. Rob has choreographed several musicals including “Kiss of the Spider Woman” (1993), “She Loves Me” (1994) and “Damn Yankees” (1994).
