Michel was born on 29th of March, 1967, to a Jewish family, originally native to Lithuania, but his grandparents migrated to France in the 1920's and he was raised in Paris. He embarked his career journey by working in the television industry, beginning with the Canal+ Channel as a director in 1988. Soon, he began directing commercials for companies like Reebok. In 1993, he premiered his first feature film on television, which was co-directed by Dominique Mézerette. It basically consisted of captured stills from various films produced by Warner Bros Studio, and re-edited and translated into French. In 1997, he directed his first short film titled "Echec a capital", which was followed by his first theoretically featured film known as "Mes Amis", wherein he casted his younger brother, Serge Hazanavicius.
His second film, "Cairo, Nest of Spies", represented a parody of the 1960's spy movies, which marked his comeback after nearly seven years, making it a major box office hit and earning $23 million, worldwide. This was accompanied by another hit, Lost in Rio, in 2009.

He is popularly known for his contribution to the film "The Players", casting Jean Dujardin.
He has announced that his upcoming film will be an adaption of the 1948 film, "The Search". The film will cast Berenice Bejo, in the Montgomery Clift role, as an NGO activist who assists a boy in finding his long-lost family in contemporary Chechnya. In 2006, he was awarded the Golden Space Needle Award for the film,"OSS: Cairo: The Nest of Spies", at Seattle International Film Festival. He won the Tokyo Grand Prix Title at the International Film Festival, Japan, for the same movie. In 2008, he was nominated for the Best Writing by the Cesar Awards.
He has been bestowed with the following highly designated honors for his distinguished work in the film, The Artist, in 2011. He was nominated for the Palme d'Or award at the Cannes Film Festival, 2011. The Phoenix Film Critics Society honored him with the prestigious awards of being the Best Director, Original Screenplay, and Film Editing. New York and Oklahoma's Film Critics Circle gave him the honour of being the Best Director.
In 2012, The AACTA awarded Michel for being the Best Director (International). Michel won the BAFTA for Original Script and Direction in the movie. He also won the Cesar Award for the Best Direction. The Film Critics Association of Chicago awarded him the Best Original Screenplay Award. He was also complimented by the Director's Guild for extinguished work in the line of Direction and Theatrical Release. The London Film Critics Circle also awarded him. Alliance of Women Film Journalist nominated Michel for awards of the Best Screenplay and Editing. However, he was honored the title of the Best Director.
