Kelis Rogers is an American singer-songwriter and certified chef. She authored the famous cookbook “My Life On A Plate: Recipes From Around the World”, and a small business owner of gourmet sauce company “Bounty & Full”. She was born to Kenneth and Eveliss, in Manhattan, New York City. Her name is a combination of her parents’ name. Kelis is the third born among her four sisters. Her mother, who inspired Kelis to pursue her singing career, is a fashion designer of Chinese and Puerto Rican descent. Rogers used to play Violin, Piano, and Saxophone, as a child. She has done her schooling from the Manhattan Country School and Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Arts, and later from “Performing Arts”, an elite school within the New York City Public School System. Here she formed the R&B trio BLU (Black Ladies United). Her tenure at LaGuardia made Kelis serious about pursuing a career in music. Before graduating high school, she worked as a bartender as well as a sales associate in a clothing store. Known as a professional musician at the age of 17, Kelis made her mark with the singles “Milkshake” and “Bossy.”
In 1999, Kelis brought out her first album in the market with the name “
Kaleidoscope”, consisting of militant, and feminist-themed lyrics over the hip-hop beats. The album underperformed in her own country but saw mild success in certain international markets. It charted at number 43 in the United Kingdom. Her album was later certified gold. She and her albums gained acclaim because of the assistance from Pharrell Williams, and The Neptunes. Some of her known albums include, Kaleidoscope (1999), Wanderland (2001), Tasty (2003), Kelis Was Here (2006), Flesh Tone (2010), and Food (2014) etc. In 2007, she auditioned for various film and TV roles. She had to fight in order to get off her music label for four years. Kelis finally got relieved from her contract in 2008. She joined Le Cordon Bleu Culinary School the same year. She got graduated in 2010, while training as a part-time saucier. Eventually, in 2013, Kelis debuted her own line of sauce, by the name "Feast,” at the Beverly Hills Food & Wine Festival. Even after spending a lot of years in Music, Kelis admits that she gets a whole lot of satisfaction in cooking, than singing.
Things took a sudden turn for Kelis, when she met the rapper 'Nas' (Nasir Jones) at MTV Video Music Awards party in 2002. After dating for one year, the couple tied the knot in January 2005. After 4 years of marriage, she filed for divorce in April 2009. Kelis got relieved from her marriage bond later in May. She gave birth to a son named Knight On July 22, 2009. In 2014, the Cooking Channel aired a Television episodic series “Saucy and Sweet” starring Kelis. The same year, she established a food truck business to cook for the party attenders at the American Music Festival SXSW. Her first cookbook named “My Life on a Plate”, was officially released on September 28, 2015. It, according to her is an exploration of tastes and cultures, and her experience as a chef, musician, mother and wife". Kelis also joined hands with
Calvin Harris for the music single “
Bounce”. Kelis gained acknowledgement at the Q Awards, NME Awards, Brit Awards, and Grammy Awards ceremonies. Police Detained Kelis in Miami Beach, Florida, and charges of disorderly conduct were imposed on her in 2007. The report depicted that the officers were posing as prostitutes at the main avenue in the South Beach nightclub district when she started hurling racial abuses at them. She was then sent to Miami-Dade County Jail and later got released on a $1,500 fine.
