She started her career by doing minor roles in television after which she got her big break in the TV show ‘Laverne and Shirley’, which kicked off in 1976 and went on till 1983. This role won her nomination in the Golden Globes, thrice. Later on, she directed many well-liked movies and produced some box office biggies.

Her parents too were in the field of entertainment. Her mother Marjorie Irene taught Tap Dance and operated a school of dance by the name ‘Marjorie Marshal’. Her dad was Anthony Masciarelli who was also known by the name ‘Tony,’ and he later changed the name to Marshall. He was a director and producer. She has been learning Tap Dance from the age of 3 and went to teach in her mother’s dance school. She passed from the Walton High School and got her higher education from the University of New Mexico.. Then she shifted to LA to be with Garry Marshall, her sibling. Her career kicked off with working in TV commercials. She went on to experience many ups and downs in her career. Then she did a role which was not more than a guest role in the TV show ‘The Odd Couple’.

The role of her boyfriend in the show was acted by Rob Reiner, Penny’s ex-husband. In 1974, she starred in the show ‘Paul sand in friends and lovers’ as Janice Dreyfuss which was closed in the middle of the season. As the makers of ‘Paul Sand’ were also the makers of The Mary Tyler Moore show, they casted her in it for her excellent comic timing. In 2013 she teamed up with Cindy Williams to bring back the magic of Lavern and Shirley in the show Sam and Cat. After this, her directing career came into prominence. Crystal Awards gave her the Women in Film honor in 1991. She went on to direct three of the episodes for the TV show, United States of Tara in 2010-11. She received the honor of Women of Vision from, Women in Film and Video in 2013. Penny declared the making of an autobiographical movie for the baseball star Effa Manely named ‘Effa’ In the year 2014. She married Micheal Henry in 1961 whom she had met in high school; their marriage ended after three years; and they gave birth to a daughter together by the name of Tracy.

A decade later she married director/actor Rob Reiner and he adopted Tracy and added his surname to her name. They broke up after 10 years. It was later seen that she was in a relationship with Art Garfunkel which also ended soon. She got lung cancer which eventually reached her brain; she revealed this in 2012 during her treatment. She is a collector of sports mementos. She has published a book in 2012 by name ‘My Mother Was Nuts’. She is survived by five of her grandchildren.
