Mathew Macfadyen was born on October 17, 1974. He was born to Meinir and Matin Macfadyen in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk. His mother was a drama teacher and former actress. His father was an oil executive. His parental and maternal grandparents were Scottish and Welsh respectively. As an outcome of his father’s job Mathew grew up in many places like Indonesia, Jakarta. He attended Oakham school in Rutland. He also went to schools in Scotland and Indonesia. At the age of seventeen, he got accepted to the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art.
From 1992 to 1995, Mathew studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. He worked with the stage company Cheek By Jowl. So, he got recognised by the British Theatre. He played in the School for Scandal as Charles Surface. He also played Benedick in Much Ado About Nothing and Antonio in Duchess of Malfi. He played at the Royal National Theatre in Henry IV as Prince Hal in parts one and two. He played The Pain and the Itch in 2007.
