He was born to a mixed cultural family where his father was an Italian and his mother an Austrian. After his father had abandoned his family soon after Mark’s birth, he was brought up by his mother. His mother changed his name so that it would help him get along with the rest of the children at his school.
Mark attended the Wymondham College in Norfolk, England, and later moved to Germany to study German Law at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich. After a year, he returned to London and joined Royal Holloway, The University of London in Surrey, and did a course in Drama and English. After that, he attended Bristol Old Vic Theatre School in Bristol. He made his debut on television with the series, ‘After Henry’ in 1989 as ‘Roger’ in an episode.
