Born in Gentilly near Trois-Rivières, Quebec, this French-Canadian film director and writer is a three-time Genie Award winner for his well-acclaimed works ‘Maelström’ in 2001, ‘Polytechnique’ in 2010 and ‘Incendies’ in 2011. His career kicked off by making short films, one of which won the Radio-Canada’s youth film competition in 1990-91. He first caught attention for his 2001 movie Maelström, which has been screened at numerous festivals around the world.
Furthermore, he won 8 Jutra Awards, and this film was adjudged “Best Canadian Film” in the Toronto International Film Festival. Denis says that as strange as it is, he has always felt that rather than a person choosing his projects it’s the other way around with the projects choosing the person. Denis Villeneuve was quoted saying this when asked about this long list of his sinister, white-knuckle films made in the last few years. Next in line was his controversial yet critically acclaimed film Polytechnique (2009) based on the shootings at the Montreal University.
Villeneuve’s career marked a sharp escalation when his film Incendies (2010) received critical acclaim and won him accolades at the Venice and Toronto International Film Festival in 2010. Along with this, it also secured a nomination at the 83rd Academy Awards for the category of the ‘Best Foreign Language Film’, and the movie further went on to win eight 31st Genie Awards for numerous categories.
