He is the second son of Luciana and Albert Romano. Ray Romano has two brothers making him the middle child. Romano married his wife Anna Scarpulla in 1987. Together they have four children. Romano went to Our Lady Queen of Martyrs in Forest Hills for his elementary and middle school. In 1975, Romano received his high school certificate from Hillcrest High School after transferring from Archbishop Molloy High School. He briefly attended Queens College where he studied accounting. Romano began his career as a Stand-up Comedian performing in New York clubs.

In 1989 he won a city-wide comedy contest called as Johnnie Walker Comedy Search. His first appearance was on MTV’s Half-Hour Comedy Hour in 1990. However, his life-turning event was when he appeared on the Late Show hosted by David Letterman. He received six Primetime Emmy Award nominations for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series as a result of his work on this show; he was the winner of this category in 2002. In addition, he received two Emmy Awards in 2005 for Outstanding Comedy Series and two more in 2003 as an executive producer for his program. Romano made television history in 2004 when he was awarded the highest salary for playing Raymond on CBS's Everybody Loves Raymond.

With $3.9 billion in revenue, the program set yet another record. Romano was part of many films, series, motion pictures, and even video games. Romano also competed in the World Series of Poker in the years 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2013, and 2015.
