He was born in 1972 in Bray, County Wicklow, Ireland. He completed his schooling at Coláiste Eoin secondary school, Dublin. Later, he graduated from the University College Dublin (UCD), where he studied mathematics and theoretical physics. At UCD, he became the auditor of the Literary and Historical Society (the university's oldest debating society) and the co-founder and co-editor of ‘The University Observer’ college newspaper. Following graduation, he started working at RTÉ as a children's TV presenter. During that time, he also began his first stand-up gigs on the Irish comedy circuit. After that, he spent three years as a presenter on the bilingual (Irish and English) children's program ‘Echo Island’. Ó Briain was seen hosting the RTÉ family entertainment game show ‘It's A Family Affair’.

Furthermore, Dara co-founded the television production company Happy Endings Productions, whose most famous show in Ireland is ‘The Panel’. The show drew quite some attention from the people and soon became one of the most talked-about shows in Ireland and was also nominated twice for the Best Entertainment show IFTA (Irish Film & Television Award). Till now, he has performed a lot and is immensely loved by the people for his jokes. According to him, “The game of comedy is all about owning the stage”. Moreover, Dara has hosted eighteen prosperous series of the comedy panel game ‘Mock the Week’ for BBC television, and he has also hosted BBC Two’s reboot of ‘Robot Wars’. Additionally, he has been the host of BBC Two’s ‘The Apprentice: You’re Fired for three years’.

One of his remarkable television works is ‘Three Men in a Boat’. Talking more about his hosting skills, he landed the perfect opportunity to host award shows in Britain and subsequently hosts the BAFTA Games Awards frequently. He has not only excelled as a comedian but has also proven himself as an incredible writer with his bestselling book ‘Tickling The English’ in 2009. His other book, ‘Beyond the Sky’, was even nominated for Best Book with Facts at the 2018 Blue Peter Brook Awards. He considers himself as a “Russian gangster'' and ''one of Tony Soprano's henchmen''.
