Sherwood Charles Schwartz was a Screenwriter and producer. He was born in Passaic, New Jersey, to a Jewish family. His siblings were mainly professional writers. Schwartz's younger brother Elroy Schwartz was a comic writer, and his elder brother was AI Schwartz, also a writer. In the 1940s, Sherwood Schwartz worked on radio shows. Later, in the 1960s, he became famous for creating the television series Gilligan's Island on CBS and the American sitcom Brady Bunch, which aired on ABC. His brother Elroy Schwartz became the lead writer for Gilligan's Island. He was honored with the Hollywood Walk of Fame and Television Walk of Fame in 2008.
Schwartz wanted to pursue a Master of Science in Biology. Still, he was unable to get admission to a medical school because, during those days, there was a limitation quota set for admitting Jewish students. Seeking a job, he started to write jokes for Bob Hope's radio program, where his elder brother AI Schwartz worked. Sherwood Schwartz's jokes were used in Hope's gigs and received colossal laughter. Then he got an opportunity to work with Bob Hope's writing team, where his dream of becoming a doctor effaced; he became a successful writer instead. He has also written for Ozzie Nelson's – The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet and a few of his other Radio shows.
Before making it big into Television, he joined the US Army and served for more than four years. During this time, he also wrote for the Armed Forces Radio Network. Sherwood Schwarz was designated as the principal writer for The Red Skeleton Show from 1956 to 1962. He was awarded an Emmy for his contributions to The Red Skeleton Show. In the late 1990s, he participated in a creator's marathon on Nick.
Sherwood Schwartz and Mildred Seidman got married on December 23, 1941. They birthed four children – Donald Schwartz (Ophthalmologist), Ross Schwartz (Attorney), Lloyd Schwartz, who joined Sherwood Schwartz in his show business, and Hope Juber became a producer and writer. On his 90th birthday, the Theatre West performed his play, Rockers (a comedy-drama), as a tribute. At the age of 94, Sherwood Schwartz died in California. The cause of his death was natural; he died during his sleep.
