Plot
The story starts with Kumail, who is from a Pakistani-American family. He is an Uber driver in Chicago and an aspiring stand-up comedian. One day during his standup comedy, when he asks the audience if anyone is from Pakistan, a white girl raises her hand for fun. After finishing his comedy session, Kumail casually confess to the girl that she should not have interrupted while he was on stage. In reality, Kumail was not at all upset, that was just his way of approaching girls. Emily introduced herself as a student in psychology and an aspiring therapist. They spent the evening together and had some quality moments at Kumail’s apartment. Later that evening, Emily booked an Uber to go home, the nearest driver was Kumail so he went ahead and dropped her off. On the way, Kumail asks Emily if they can meet again, to which Emily replies she is not dating anyone nor does she want to. The following day, Kumail goes to see his family, his family is very traditional and only believes in arrange marriage. On his mother’s insistence, Kumail goes to the basement to offer prayers, but in reality he does not do any of it. From here we learn that he does not believe in his religion. The rest of the movie revolves around Kumail and Emily’s relationship.
Star Performance
The cast is conveniently and suitably chosen. The story is also cleverly written, with some humorous comedy as well as some emotional moments. Altogether, it might feel a bit boring in the middle but the way the filmmakers showcased accurate Pakistani life and all those customs makes the movie interesting.Â
Analysis
The big sick story revolves around the comic's somewhat personal life when his girlfriend was put in a medically induced coma and he had to hang out with her parents, whom he had never met or talked to before. Kumail's parents were indeed reduced to stereotypes, and their part was mostly forced humor. But the entire sequence between Kumail and Emily's parents when Emily is in the hospital seems genuine and heartfelt. The focus on the relationship between Kumail and Emily's parents was appropriate, it brought in the right amount of humor, which is of course the best part of the movie. The biggest problem you will find in the film is that the cast has Indians who use Indian gestures and a sharp Indian accent in English, not the Pakistani accent which is pretty different. But the genius in wrapping up the various stereotypes and expectations of both in a beautiful story makes it so engaging.Â

Verdict
The movie takes you on an emotional journey along itself, but the best part is you won't cry but laugh. Overall, it’s a must-watch, especially if you are brown.
