The movie ‘ Pokkiri’, stars Ilayathalapathy Vijay, and is a remake of a Telugu movie directed by Prabhu Deva. The movie was released in theaters with tremendous expectations among fans, and both the director Prabhu Deva, and the actor Vijay, have managed to please the expectations of the audience. The movie carries the same gory scenes as in the original. But, there is a hangover while watching the Telugu original. One has to watch it on screen to know the results.
Vijay does the role of Thamizh, who is a freelance thug in the movie. He supports anybody and everybody as long as they pay him the due amount for the work he does. There is a tinge of romance with Asin, playing the role of Priya. Asin is an aerobics instructor in the movie. Vijay happens to make a good gesture towards Asin, and in return she starts loving him. Prakash Raj makes an appearance in the movie as Ali Bhai, a don who is in a foreign country. Once in awhile, the don, Prakash Raj, turns up in town. There is a twist in the movie when Vijay aids Prakash Raj in ousting the members of the rival faction. Asin is now in confusion about the true nature of Vijay as a rowdy.
Vijay suffered a minor setback as his previous movie, ‘ Aadhi’, failed to impress the audience. But, his appearance in the flick ‘Pokkiri’, has compensated for the loss. Vijay bears a striking resemblance to Mahesh Babu in the original film. The delivery of dialogues has been played down. It is not the usual vibrant Vijay one observes on the screen. Asin does not have much scope for performance in the movie. Prakash Raj has played the role of a villain with a humorous vein in it. Also, there is a separate comedy track by Vadivelu that makes the movie sprightly. Other supporting actors as Nasser and Mukesh Tiwari, who have played their roles to near perfection.
The movie’s hero is a thug, and how could a Rowdy be pleasing in a romance? The question has been well-answered by Prabhu Deva, through this directorial venture. The chemistry between Vijay and Asin works out well in the romantic sequences, although there are a few lewd dialogues. The meetings between Vijay and Asin prove a nice treat to the fans. The love story and the lighter vein have been handled well. But, the gory scenes bear a stark resemblance to the Telugu original directed by Prabhu Deva. The blood-stained scenes just before the interlude are hair-raising and send a shiver down the spine.
What is there?
1. Cinematography by Nirav Shah is above par.
2. Romantic sequences add to the stars of the movie.
3. The stunt by FEFSI Vijayan adds to the movie’s strength.
4. Music composition by Mani Sharma is good and the numbers are hummed till date.
What is not there?
1. In some junctures, Prakash Raj seems to have overacted.
2. Some dialogues in the movie turn out to be lewd.
3. Except for some scenes, comedy by Vadivelu is very average.
A fine treat for Vijay fans with no resemblance to the Telugu original, except for the action scenes.
