Plot

The people of Laketown sense a threat to their peaceful existence, just after the dragon Smaug leaves the Lonely Mountain ‘for good.’ Bilbo Baggins sees the greed getting the better of Thorin and decides to take the matter into his own hands. Now Bilbo must stop the Orc Army, led by Azog, as well as restore peace in the Shire.

Star Performances

Peter Jackson once again proves why he is the undisputed master of the fantasy genre. With ‘The Battle of the Five Armies,’ he has only proved why he is a true disciple of JRR Tolkien in terms of adapting his classics successfully.

Special mention to the visual effects team from Weta Digital, who have created a dazzling spectacle of a franchise with each of ‘The Hobbit’ movies, the latest movie being no exception.

Martin Freeman and Ian McKellen have done a brilliant job as Bilbo and Gandalf respectively. For fans of Christopher Lee, this is one of his final on-screen appearances, and he does a phenomenal job as Saruman the White.

Analysis

Following the humongous success of the ‘Lord of Rings trilogy, when Peter Jackson thought of expanding the horizon through a trilogy on ‘The Hobbit,’ many analysts were skeptical. The multiple delays only strengthened their doubts further. However, with “The Hobbit: Battle of The Five Armies,” Peter Jackson has proved why he is a pro in this genre.

Visually, this film is a gem of its kind. The visual effects, as well as the production design, are top-notch. While the confluence of the characters may seem jarring to some, every character has its purpose. The skillful direction of Peter Jackson only adds to the charm of the film.

On the acting front, this film is more than just watchable. Martin Freeman has proved with his trilogy why he is a force to reckon with. Ian Holm as the older Bilbo and Ian McKellen as the iconic Gandalf only add to the acting brilliance of the franchise. Richard Armitage as Thorin packs a solid punch.
