Plot

The film’s protagonist is Stanton Carlisle, played by Bradley Cooper. In the beginning of the film we see him hiding a corpse under the floor of a house and then set fire to the house. Wandering around aimlessly, he enters a carnival and watches a geek show. He is offered a temporary job in the carnival which he accepts. He later takes on a permanent job in the carnival at the owner’s insistence and works alongside Madam Zeena, played by Toni Collette, who performed the clairvoyant act in the carnival, and her husband Pete, played by David Strathairn. Madam Zeena and Pete teach Stanton how to use their code language and their cold reading techniques. Soon, Stanton leaves the carnival along with Molly, played by Rooney Mara. Stanton finds success in a psychic act for the wealthy elites, but is corrupted by money and fame, and his relationship with Molly deteriorates because of this. The film follows Stanton as he is corrupted by fame and riches and his morality and sanity degrades more and more.

Star Performance

Bradley Cooper is phenomenal as Stanton. He has perfectly portrayed his characters greed, vulnerability, and instability. Cate Blanchett, Toni Collette, David Strathairn, and Rooney Mara also give stellar performances.

Analysis

The film describes the protagonists’ descent into madness. The film tracks the protagonists deteriorating mental state as he is drawn deeper into the web of power, wealth, and fame.
