Plot
A world where forced sterilization vanishes the physical differences and makes everybody beautiful.
Star performance
Joey King is another actor who is stuck in the Netflix chain, doing one underwhelming project after the other. Here she also tries to bring out the bubbly female protagonist, but the lack of emotional connection lets her performance down. Keith Powers and Brianne Tju have something to offer in their characters and play their parts well. Laverne Cox’s character has the most problematic and toxic take. Rest of the cast don’t have anything to offer and are just playing their parts and they did that well despite being underwritten.
Analysis
Since the evolution of Young Adult Dystopian (YAD) Films, we have seen numerous types of it like The Hunger Games, Divergent, The Maze Runner Click to look into! >> Read More... and all of these are franchises. Uglies also intend to be like that but is incompetent and disappointing to be considered in that niche. The makers have hired prominent people like the screenwriter of Divergent Vanessa Taylor adding the necessary elements a (YAD) film has, from being emotionally riveting to stylised actionness. Uglies focused on plastic surgery and beauty enhancement as it is the most explored topic among young adults. But the film makes a mockery out of it. The prettiness of a person is distinguishable based on his clothes, facial symmetry, and makeup. The worldbuilding itself is so haphazard and lazily done. Many of the sequences in the film are downright absurd, like Joey King’s character pointing at her “flaws”, blue eyes, asymmetrical face, and looking like a human. Laverne Cox’s (who is one of the most famous trans actors in the world) character is a villain whose surgeries are making her a better person than her actual self. LIKE WHAT!!!. The film feels obsolete in its execution. Even the CGI is childish and flat. The film lacks conviction. The actors have played their part okayish-ly, but with the lack of depth and the emotional connection in the story falls flat. Uglies intended to be a new-age YAD film but made a joke of itself.

Verdict
Uglies is a failed attempt in making another YAD franchise, the film is just forgettable. It can be watched in a random Netflix binge.
