Plot

Petey Shelburn tries to destroy a monkey toy playing a drum at the antique shop in 1999. Before he do it, the monkey played the drum and chain reactions took place, making the shop owner disembowelled with a harpoon gun. After this incident, Petey leaves his twins, Hal and Bill, and his wife, Lois, and disappears. His sons find the monkey in his closet along with his belongings, and they wind the key, which leads to a chain reaction, resulting in the beheading of the babysitter. Later, Bill bullies Hal and this makes Hal wind the key, thinking that it will kill his brother. But, their mother died, instead making them shift their residence to their aunt’s. Before going to live with their aunt and uncle, Hal dismantled the monkey toy. But, to their shock, it reappeared at their aunt’s house. Despite Hal’s plead, Bill winds up the key, which eventually kills their uncle. What will happen next? When will this hunt stop? The rest of the story deals with this.

Star Performance

Theo James played the roles of Hal and Bill well. Elijah Wood, Tatiana Maslany, and Colin O’Brien have done a good job.

Analysis

The tonal shift in this film is one of the biggest pluses. It shifts from horror to black comedy to tragedy and entertains the audience with multiple genres. Some may not like these tonal changes, as they are confused to laugh or stun. The storytelling is a bit slow, resulting in the pacing issues. Highlighting the monkey with a bright background and lighting brings some eerie feeling. The sound design is very effective. The visuals are impressive, and the editing is okay.

What’s There?

  • A mixture of good black comedy and horror
  • The performances are top-notch

What’s Not There?

  • Pacing issues due to the slow storytelling

Verdict

The film is a mixture of black comedy and horror. For those who love serious horror movies without any comedy, this may not work. For the ones who want a variety of genres, this will impress!
