P. R. Varalakshmi is an Indian movie actress in the period of 1970s and 1980s. She was on of the top homely actresses in South Indian cinema. Her first film was ‘Vazhaiyadi Vazhaiin’ in Tamil, which was directed by K. S. Gopalakrishnan. She was the leading Tamil supporting actress in films like "Padai Veetu Amman", "Mayandi", "Tiger Thathachar" and many more films. She recalls by saying that she has not achieved much success in her career as she had no godfather or a guide to managing her success. It was because of this she went to act in other South Indian languages films too. She has acted around 600 films so far in all South Indian films.
Apart from playing heroines, she also had played mother character in the big screen. Later, she had appeared in TV series later on. She is a firm believer in luck and feels that luck did not smile upon her and this was the main reason that she was left far behind in success. She is a very modest person and never been to calculative in her success. Her notable films include Shankarlal, Ore Sakshi, Deivamsham, Vazhaiyadi Vazhaiin and Kaadu. In Malayalam, she acted with Madhu,
and other leading heroes of Mollywood. In Tamil films too, she acted with Sridevi, Jai Shankar and other popular heroes. She has performed in many social family dramas and held a top spot through most of the 1970s. She was a gifted actress and had a screen presence that made her busy actresses in 70s. She could convey every emotion from happiness to sadness to disappointment to love to anger in every role that she portrayed.
Whether it is a simple homemaker or an illiterate village mother or the eldest daughter or an urban mother, she managed to gain the attention of public.
