John Carney is an Irish TV and screenplay director. He was born in the year 1972 in Dublin, Ireland. He completed his studies from De La Salle College Church town, and then, attended Synge Street CBS.

From 1991 to 1993, Carney used to be a bass guitarist for his rock band called The Frames. He also directed many of his music videos. Apart from recording music videos, he used to be a writer, as well as a director. He wrote and directed two short-length pictures called ‘Hotel’, and Shining Star. It was his first direction motion picture, which received two awards. In 1996, Carney and his friend, Tom Hall, directed and wrote their first feature, November Afternoon. It released to a limited market due to its budget problem, but Irish Times appraised it as the Talkie of the Year. The drama depicts the story of two couples whose relation started rendering after a weekend. Carney scored himself for his jazz track.

Carney made another one-hour show called, Just in Time. His next one was released at the Dublin Cine Festival. Carney and his fellow, Tom Hall, wrote and directed it. The story is about a girl who was tortured by an adult. It did not release widely.

In 2001, Carney had directed and co-written, On the Edge. It was released in Universal Studios. He received the Silver Hitchcock Award at the Dinard Festival of British Cinema in 2001. Another one under his direction titled as, Catch the Sun, was co-written by Daniel James and was released only in USA.

In 2001, he directed and wrote for TV shows. Carney, his friend, Tom Hall, and his brother, Kieran Carney, directed and co-wrote one of the most successful TV shows called Bachelors Walk. Then, he started an independent TV series, which became the most successful show in the history of Irish television. It completed its three seasons. He starred O Doherty, an Irish comedian, in his directed screenplay, The Modest Adventures of David O Doherty.

In 2006, a music drama called The Frames was released, and it won the World Cinema Audience Award. It had huge success in its first three months of its release. For this, he won the Most Promising Newcomer Award in 2007 at the Standard British Film Awards. It also won the title for Best Original Song in the Academy Award.
