She was the elder daughter of Sylvia and Mancil Ray Duncan. Her dad was the owner of a gas station. She was trained in dance in her teens and started working in the productions of ‘The King and I’ and ‘The Music Man’. She studied at Lon Morris Junior College. She won a Tony nomination for her role in Broadway musical ‘Canterbury Tales’. She portrayed the role of Maisie in ‘The Boy Friend’, a Jazz musical, which won her a Tony nomination for ‘Best Actress’. In 1971, she was cast in a Disney comedy film ‘The Million Dollar Duck’. She did another Disney film ‘The Cat from Another World’. She gave her voice for their animated film ‘The Fox and The Hound’. She got the critically acclaimed role in the mini-series ‘Roots’ for which she got nominated at Emmy Awards. She played the title role in the film ‘Star Spangled Girl’. CBS cast her in ‘Funny Face’ (1971) as Sandy Stockton.
It was a success but because she was diagnosed with a tumor in the optic nerve, the show had gone off the air. She married Dr.Thomas Calcateera in 1975, whom she met during her operation. The second installment of the show was a flop. She did guest roles in musical comedies such as ‘The Tonight Show’, ‘The Flip Wilson Show’, ‘Laugh.In’, and ‘The Sonny & Cher Show’. She was a judge in the shows - ‘Hollywood Squares’ and ‘What’s My Line?’. In 1979, she played the title role of ‘Peter Pan’ Broadway musical, which was a huge success, winning her third Tony nomination. In 1984, she played happy-go-lucky Tommy Tune in ‘My One and Only’. In 1980, she married choreographer Don Correia. She did highly successful TV commercials of Wheat Thins with their children Michael and Jeffrey. In 1987, she made a comeback to primetime TV scene with ‘The Hogan Family’ playing the head of the household after the character of Harper died. Her character was so successful that the show continued for four more seasons. In 1988, she did three of the children video series ‘Barney and the Backyard Gang’. The 1994 movie ‘The Swan Princess’, she voiced ‘Queen Uberta’. She played the lead role in the 2009 play ‘Driving Miss Daisy’ at Texas. She also did as volunteer in the organisation ‘Record for the Blind & Dyslexic’ (RFB&D). She received the coveted ‘National Rehabilitation Hospital Victory Award’ for her immense contributions. Her last film as of now is in 2010. She is currently playing ‘Madame du Maurier’ in ‘Finding Neverland, a Broadway production.
