Between 1998 and 2007, the group won 10 Country Music Association Awards and 13 Grammy Awards, with Natalie serving as the lead vocalist. Mother, her debut solo album, was released on May 7, 2013. Five Grammy Awards were subsequently given to the record. The first album released since the Dixie Chicks' break began in 2007. Ben Harper assisted in co-producing the record. On the CD, she interprets a number of cover songs, such as Eddie Vedder's Without You, Pink Floyd's Mother, and Buckley's Lover, You Should Have Come Over. The Dixie Chicks took home all five Grammys they were nominated for in 2007, winning three for Not Ready to Make Nice and two for Taking the Long Way. She co-wrote four songs for the Dixie Chicks' initial three albums, including Fly's Without You, which hit number one on the Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks list.

The group's 2006 album Taking the Long Way, which reached No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart, had 14 songs on which she served as the lead songwriter. Not Ready to Make Nice, from the album Taking the Long Way, peaked at No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 and won the girl band the Song of the Year Grammy. In both her roles as a singer with the Dixie Chicks and as an independent artist, Natalie works with various musicians. In 1999, while participating in the musical tour Lilith Fair, The Dixie Chicks collaborated with Sheryl Crow for the first time. Since then, Crow has collaborated with the Dixie Chicks on three projects: her album Sheryl Crow and Friends: Live from Central Park; a Crow-remixed version of the Chicks' song Landslide; and the Dixie Chicks' song Favorite Year from Taking the Long Way.

Some of the few musicians with whom she has shared the stage are Ben Harper, Charlie Robison, Yellowcard, Neil Diamond, Patty Griffin, Pat Green, Pete Yorn, Eddie Vedder, and Stevie Nicks. Gaslighter, an album by The Chick, was released on July 17, 2020, after a very long break. They have released eight albums in their career including Thank Heaven for Dale Evans, Shouldn’t a Told You That, Little Ol’ Cowgirl, Wide Open Spaces, and Home.
