Linda Lavin is an American actress and singer. She is recognised for her on off-Broadway shows and her portrayal of the main character on the show Alice. She was born on 15 October 1937 in Portland, Maine to Lucille (opera singer) and David J. Lavin (businessman). The family was an active member of a Jewish community in the local area. She did her schooling from Waynflete School and graduation from College of William and Mary. At college, she performed in the Theater productions of director and professor named Howard Scammon. She played a lead role in Pulitzer-prize winner playwright Paul Green’s drama called The Common Glory. In the late 1950s, she became the member of Compass Players.

In 1962, she started with a Broadway career with making an appearance in the musical A Family Affair. Other shows include The Riot Act, Something Different and Cop-Out. In early 1966, she appeared on the cast recordings of The Mad Show. Her work got the recognition with It's a Bird...It's a Plane...It's Superman. Off- Broadway shows to her credit include Wet Paint and Little Murders. She received the Theatre World Award for former and Drama Desk Award for latter. In 1967, she did the TV version of the musical named Damn Yankees alongside Phil Silvers. In 1969, she married Ron Leibman whom she later divorced in 1980. In 1973, they moved to Hollywood, California.

Then she married Kip Niven, divorced him in 1992. She did television shows like Harry O, The Nurses, Kaz, and Rhoda. In Barney Miller, she received a recurring role. Then, she left the show and got cast as the lead character (Alice Hyatt ) in the show named Alice. It ran from 1976 to 1985 and was a hit. It was based on Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore, a Martin Scorsese-directed film. She performed the theme song of the show. She garnered a Primetime Emmy Award and two Golden Globe Awards nominations. She appeared on various TV shows including the one named Linda in Wonderland. She has played parts in Conrad Bloom and Room for Two. She portrayed the character named Lorna in Sean Saves the World. She made guest appearances on Touched by an Angel, The Sopranos, Law& Order: Criminal Intent,and The Muppet Show.

She also did Television movies such as Jerry, Another Woman's Child, and Stolen Memories: Secrets from the Rose Garden, etc. She also tried her hand in directing the same such as Flour Babies. In 1984, she debuted on big screen with The Muppets Take Manhattan. Other feature films include I Want to Go Home The Back-Up PlanandSee You in the Morning. In 1987, she won Tony Award for Best Actress in a Play and Drama Desk Award for the role of Kate in Broadway Bound. In 1990, she starred in Gypsy, a Broadway. Other shows, in the field, to her credit, include The Sisters Rosensweig, The Diary of Anne Frank, Death-Defying Acts, The Tale of the Allergist's Wife, Collected Stories, Other Desert Cities and Too Much Sun etc. She did concert and cabaret performances.
