Lauryn Hill, whose full name is Lauryn Noelle Hill, is a songwriter, rapper, producer, actress, and singer. She was born in East Orange, New Jersey, United States of America on May 26, 1975, to Valerie Hill and Mal Hill. While Valerie taught English at a local school, Mal was a management consultancy.Â
Hill has a younger sibling named Malaney. Valerie loved playing piano in her pass time while Mal would sing at weddings and nightclubs. In fact, she wouldn't sleep until she heard What's Going On. Hill went to Columbia High School and was a very bright student. Once during a basketball match, she crooned The Star-Spangled Banner, and immediately she became the most sought after student in the campus. In 1988, Hill participated in It's Showtime at the Apollo and sang Who's Lovin' You? However, the audience booed her, and she cried of-stage.
While in high school, Prakazrel "Pras" Michel offered her to be a pet of his music group. She agreed, and the pack eventually started performing at local events. After becoming famous, they christened themselves Fugees and produced several albums.
Besides singing, she took acting lessons too. Hill's first role was in Club XII. Though the project didn't become successful, an agent saw the spark in her and offered her role in As the World Turns. After displaying her talent in As the World Turns, she has fagged in Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit, Hav Plenty, and others. Hill enrolled herself in Columbia University as she wanted to study history but dropped out after a year only. Fugees later separated, and Hill embarked on her solo journey as a singer.
She creates hits like The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, I Used to Love Him, and much more. Hill has graced the covers of Time, The New York Times Fashion Magazine, Rolling Stone, and others. In 2000, she started to grow frustrated over the constant scrutiny of media since it deprived her of small joys like running the errand or stepping out in a hotel. The frustration soon spiraled into depression and self-doubt. Eventually, she managed to come out of it through music.
She dated Jean however they split because Jean cheated on her with Claudinette. Hill then began a relationship with Rohan Marley and bore his children named Zion David, Joshua Omaru, John Nesta, and Selah Louise. After staying together for some period, they disunited.
In 1996, Hill established Refugee Project to help transform and improve the lives of youngsters with issues. She has donated massive amounts to refugees of Haitian and has funded water cleaning projects in Uganda and Kenya.
