She was the third daughter of Andrew who was a butcher and Mary Gaines who was a school teacher. She was raised in the African Methodist Episcopal Church. She married Australian actor Heimuth Sommer in 1973, and had a daughter Natalia Pia Melanie Sommer in the same year. She got divorced in 1976, and she adopted the surname of her ex-husband as her stage name. Later, she married Brooklyn Dreams singer Bruce Sudano on 16 July 1980. They have two daughters named Brooklyn Sudano and Amanda Sudano. She was also a founder of Oasis Church in Los Angeles. She and her family moved to Los Angeles in 1995.
Donna Summer started her career in church performance at the age of 10 replacing a vocalist, who failed to appear. She completed her schooling at Boston’s Jeremiah E. Burke High School.
