Laura Lane Welsh Bush was born on November 4th, 1946 in Midland, Texas to Harold Bruce Welch and Jenna Louise Hawkins Welch. Her Father, Harold Bruce Welch, maintained a real estate business where his wife and Laura Bush’s mother, Jenna Louise Hawkins Welch, worked as a bookkeeper. Laura Bush was an only child, though she mentions in her book, “Spoken from the Heart” that her siblings died in childhood. In her youth, her father, a war veteran, vowed to give up arms when he returned from war. Instead, he drank and gambled. Laura mentions, in her book, that it was a “West Texas thing,” explaining that people hailing from the place were “risk takers.” For most of her youth, she lived a normal life. An incident that is, however, significant in Bush’s life was a car accident in 1963 when seventeen-year-old Laura Bush ignored a “stop” sign and crashed into a car driven by her friend, Mike Douglas, who died. She claims that this tragic incident caused her to suffer years of guilt. She almost lost her religious faith. From 1961 to 1964, Laura Bush went to a Robert E. Lee High School in her town. In the year 1968, she graduated from Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas with a degree in Elementary Education and then took up the post of an elementary school teacher at Kennedy Elementary School in Houston.
