Dana Elaine Owens, known by her stage Queen Latifah was born on March 18, 1970. She was born in New Jersey, United States. Queen Latifah is the pioneer feminists in the industry. She has made her name across many fields in the industry. There is almost nothing she cannot do.

Early Life

Queen Latifah was born and raised in New Jersey. She went to a Catholic School in her hometown where she was raised in Baptist faith. She was born to Rita Bray and Lancelot Owens. Her father was a police officer and mother, a school teacher. Latifah showcased her talent right from her school days. She represented her school in Basketball and also sang her first number while she was in high school. She named herself Latifah after reading a book full of Arabic names. She started her career as a singer but went on to perform in films and on television. She plays a successful hand in comedy as well.

Queen Latifah’s work is widely spread across music, acting, writing, modelling and comedy. Latifah began her career in music initially. She began with hip-hop music and was a crew member for producer King Gemini. She showcased herself by rapping in hip hop music. Her music related to issues with black women, domestic violence and harassment. She was helped by Fab 5 Freddy to sign for Tommy Boy Records. She released her first album All Hail the Queen, which was released in 1989 when Latifah was just 19 years old. She made two musical appearances before releasing her fourth album Order in the Court. She started singing solo after this. She changed her genre to jazz and traditional music. The Dana Owens Album was her first solo which was released in 2004. In 2008, Latifah moved back to hip-hop music. She released her personal album in 2009, which was named Persona. She played supporting roles in Living Out Loud and The Bone Collector. She became mainstream in 2002. She is amongst the lesser musician to have been nominated for the Academy Awards.
