James Austin Gleason was a famous actor, screenwriter, and playwright of America. His parents are William L. Gleason and Mina. He gave many stage performances in his childhood. He worked as a printer's devil, messenger boy, lift boy, etc. He served the United States Army in the Philippines. He started his stage career and made it his professional career. For two years, he acted in London and later he returned to the United States. He became a dialogue writer for comedies. James wrote many plays, most of which were played on Broadway.

During the World War I, he again served the United States Army until the end of the war. James' first film was a silent film named "Polly of the Follies" in the year 1922. It starred Horace Knight, Constance Talmadge, and Thomas Carr. He was a co-writer of the American pre-code musical film named "The Broadway Melody", which won the Academy Award for being the best picture. He was also a co-writer of the American pre-code drama film named "Change of Heart" in the year 1934. He acted in many films along with Lucile, his wife.

In the American romantic drama film named "The Clock", he acted as a milk cart driver to the roles played by Robert Walker, and Judy Garland An American singer, actress, and vaudevillian, Jud >> Read More... who gives lessons on marriage to them. In the film adaptation of the 1945 American movie named "A Tree Grows in Brooklyn", he acted as a bartender. James was nominated for his acting in the movie named "Here Comes Mr. Jordan" for the award named Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. He acted as a boxing manager in that film. James acted with the American film actor named Robert Armstrong.

He appeared in many episodes of TV series like "The Public Defender", "Alfred Hitchcock Presents", "The Real McCoys", etc. Lucille and James had a son who is an actor. His name is Russell Gleason. Russell died on 26th December 1945 when he fell from a window of the fourth story house. Some people said it was a suicide, while some felt it was an accident.

Russell's acted as Muller in the American epic Pre-Code war film named "All Quiet on the Western Front" in the year 1930. James was buried at 5835 West Slauson Avenue in the Culver City of California in the Holy Cross Cemetery.
